E-E-A-T — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness — was formalized in Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines. It was designed to help human quality raters evaluate content quality and inform algorithmic signals.
In the era of AI search, E-E-A-T has become more important, not less. AI systems that generate answers by synthesizing web content need to evaluate source quality. The mechanisms AI systems use to assess quality map closely to E-E-A-T signals — sometimes more literally than Google's traditional ranking algorithms did.
Why E-E-A-T Matters More in Generative Search
When a user performs a traditional search, they evaluate the sources themselves. They click through, skim the page, and decide whether to trust it.
When an AI system generates an answer, it makes that trust evaluation on behalf of the user. The AI is deciding which sources to include in its synthesis. Sources that signal low credibility, vague expertise, or anonymous authorship are less likely to be selected.
The model is not reading your content the way a human does. It is pattern-matching against thousands of signals to determine: Is this a credible source for this type of claim?

- Author profile presence — a credible author page with verifiable information
- Structured presence — a Wikipedia entry, Wikidata entity, or Google Knowledge Panel for you or your organization
AI systems, particularly those using RAG from live web content, weight these external signals heavily. A page on a domain with strong inbound authority from credible sources is more likely to be retrieved and cited.
What to do: Invest in digital PR. Get cited and mentioned in publications that cover your field. Build a comprehensive author profile. Publish across multiple channels (your own site, guest contributions, interviews) to expand your citation surface.
Trustworthiness: The foundation everything else builds on
Trustworthiness is about accuracy, transparency, and integrity. A site can demonstrate expertise and authority and still fail on trust if it has:
- Factual errors or outdated claims
- Missing or ambiguous authorship
- No privacy policy or contact information
- Intrusive or misleading advertising
- Thin or auto-generated content alongside human-written content
For AI systems, trust signals include:
- Factual accuracy — AI systems can now cross-reference claims against other sources; inaccurate content undermines citation probability
- Clear attribution — citing sources for statistics and claims
- Visible authorship — named authors with verifiable credentials
- Transparency — editorial standards, conflict of interest disclosures, methodology notes
What to do: Audit your content for factual accuracy. Cite sources. Show who wrote the content and why they are qualified. Keep contact and legal information current.
Practical E-E-A-T Implementation
Author pages that function as entity documents
An author page is not a bio box. It is a structured entity document that helps AI systems understand who you are and why you are credible.
A strong author page includes:
- Full name (matching how you appear in other online contexts)
- Professional title and current position
- Areas of specialization (be specific)
- Verifiable credentials (degrees, certifications, years in field)
- Published work, talks, or media appearances
- Links to professional profiles (LinkedIn, industry associations)
- Contact or inquiry method
This page should be linked from every article you author, and the author name should be in <article> or structured data markup.

The sameAs array is particularly important — it helps AI systems connect your entity across different online contexts, which strengthens authority signals.
Citing sources explicitly in content
Move from general claims to cited claims:
Before: "Studies show that pages with structured data perform better in AI search."
After: "A 2023 study from Princeton and Georgia Tech found that adding structured data and citing sources in content increased AI citation rates by up to 40%."
The specificity is the signal. Vague attribution ("studies show," "experts say") provides no authority signal. Named studies with institutions and dates do.
Building your entity on the web
Your authority as a source in AI systems is partly determined by how consistently you appear as an entity across the web. Actions that build entity strength:

Your Money Your Life (YMYL) content — medical, financial, legal, and safety topics — is evaluated more stringently by both Google's quality raters and AI systems. If you publish in these areas:
- Credentials are required — claims in YMYL domains need credentialed authors, not just experienced practitioners
- Sources must be primary — cite peer-reviewed studies, official guidelines, and regulatory sources; not secondary summaries
- Disclaimers matter — appropriate disclaimers (not legal advice, consult a professional) are part of trust signals, not hedging weakness
- Currency is critical — YMYL information that is outdated can cause real harm; AI systems weight recency more heavily in these domains
Measuring E-E-A-T Progress
E-E-A-T is not directly measurable as a single metric. Use these proxies:
