Structured Data for Generative Engine Optimization

Structured data — primarily JSON-LD schema markup — helps AI systems understand what your content contains and in what format. While structured data is not a direct ranking factor for traditional SEO, its role in GEO is more pronounced: AI systems use schema as a content parsing shortcut, and pages with accurate structured data are easier for them to extract answers from.

This guide focuses on the schema types most relevant to AI search visibility, with implementation examples.


Why Structured Data Matters More for GEO

When an LLM retrieves a page to use as a source, it is parsing HTML and inferring content structure. Schema markup gives it explicit, machine-readable signals:

  • What type of content this is (Article, FAQPage, HowTo)
  • Who the author is and what their credentials are (Person, Organization)
  • What specific questions and answers this page contains (FAQPage)
  • What sequential steps this page describes (HowTo)
  • What claims this page makes and what it cites (Article with citation)

Pages with accurate structured data are reliably easier to parse and cite than structurally similar pages without it.


High-Priority Schema Types for GEO

1. Article (with author and dateModified)

Use on: blog posts, guides, analysis pieces, any editorial content

The Article schema is foundational. The most important properties for GEO are:

  • author — link to a Person entity with credentials
  • datePublished and dateModified — recency signals
  • headline — matches the H1, clearly describes the content
  • description — summary of the content used in AI previews

Use on: any page with question-and-answer sections, checklists structured as Q&A, resource pages

FAQPage schema directly mirrors the format AI Overviews use when generating answers. It is one of the highest-correlation schema types for AI Overview inclusion.

Requirements for effective FAQPage schema:

  • Questions should match actual user search queries (use GSC to find these)
  • Answers should be complete enough to stand alone (2–5 sentences)
  • The questions and answers should be visible on the page (not schema-only)

Implementation Best Practices

Use JSON-LD, not Microdata

JSON-LD is Google's recommended format. It is injected in a <script> tag and does not require modifying your HTML structure. Microdata and RDFa work but are harder to maintain.

Test with Google's Rich Results Test

Before deploying, validate at search.google.com/test/rich-results. This catches syntax errors, missing required fields, and properties that will not be processed.

Keep schema synchronized with visible content

A common compliance error: schema markup that describes content differently than what is visible on the page. If your FAQPage schema contains questions and answers that are not present on the page, Google will ignore or penalize the markup.

Stack schema types where appropriate

A blog post can have both Article and FAQPage schema if it includes a Q&A section. A guide can have both Article and HowTo. Stacking is valid and often beneficial.

Do not over-schema

Applying schema to content that does not match the type (e.g., marking a marketing paragraph as a HowTo step) is a quality signal violation. Google's spam policies cover schema misuse.

Validation and Monitoring

After implementing structured data:

  1. Validate — Google Rich Results Test immediately after deployment
  2. Monitor — GSC's "Enhancements" section shows structured data errors and warnings
  3. Track rich result appearances — GSC's Performance report shows which rich results your pages appear in
  4. Test AI citation — manually query AI systems for your target queries and check if structured data helped

What Structured Data Does Not Do

Structured data is a parsing aid, not a ranking factor. It does not:

  • Guarantee inclusion in AI Overviews
  • Override domain authority signals
  • Fix thin or inaccurate content
  • Substitute for genuine E-E-A-T signals

Treat structured data as the last layer of a well-optimized page, not the foundation.
